My students love to participate in activities that they can relate to...they enjoy hands-on activities. They also like to search for answers - like detectives!!! Hence, I consider that this lab activity comes very handy when we start discussing the interactions of animals in their ecosystem. I imagine my students opening the owl pellets like they are studying a crime scene. They will have to figure out the specimen of the rodent or creature that the owl regurgitated in a pellet. They will learn how to classify the rodents according to their bones and skulls. My students will apply the knowledge they have of environmental interactions (food web: carnivores, herbivores, predator, prey), between the owl and rodents, as well as the rodent anatomy - skeletal system. It is crucial that my students have the opportunity to have ownership of this lab activity and discover the answers to many questions on their own. I cannot wait to see my students trying to uncover the mystery that each owl pellet hides within!
