Students need to be engaged in content that can feel overwhelming or complicated. My students have been reading fiction graphic novels like crazy, share them with each other, and recommend them to others. My students are voracious readers! They devour fiction stories like their favorite dessert. Non fiction texts can be challenging, but non fiction graphic novels have all of the same information with the added bonus of visuals and engagement of a comic book/graphic novel. Learning about the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) can seem straightforward and factual, but these graphic texts can make the content exciting and the narration helps the information "stick"! The causes and course of the Revolutionary War can be distant and unaccessible, but graphic texts can tell the story of a fight for freedom and control that kids can understand.
