I work at an inner city title one school. This means that most of our students qualify for free or reduced meals. Our students are predominantly Hispanic and African American. For the last four years, our art program that the district provides has been scaled back because of cuts in funding. First, they took away outside programs. Then they reduce the number of days the art experts came and the number of classes they taught. This year, the district only funded the art teachers for a semester. For the students where I teach this is cutting out an important part of their education. Most students do better when we use different strategies to teach them and I believe art is a important tool to reach students who other wise wouldn't do well with just traditional techniques. To help the English language learners and my struggling writers, I use storyboards and thinking maps that use pictures from there we add words, then sentences, and finally stories. Art is an important technique.
