I teach in a small, rural high school where many of my students have lived their entire lives. Living in a small community makes it difficult to imagine a world outside and bigger than their own. Due to this limited perspective, they underestimate their options and power as young people. Many of my students have already decided if they plan to attend college, technical school, or enter the work force immediately after high school. This greatly impacts their interest and work ethic in school. I want to make connections for my students; I want them to see the power and relevance of the past in their future. I want them to learn from history, relate it to themselves, and understand how that affects their future and the future of their community and their world. I want them to understand that education doesn't begin and end in the classroom and it isn't just for the college bound, but for everyone.
