Here in Miami's inner city, the harsh reality is that 94.8% of our ambitious public school students are receiving free or reduced lunch. Many of our students have never been on a plane, some have never been outside the state of Florida, and others rarely have the opportunity to see the world outside of their neighborhood. In our classroom, the students have access to five "dinosaur computers" as we refer to them, that are at least ten years ancient. For many of our students, these computers are their only means of accessing technology. I remember my math teachers in H.S. using an overhead projector to teach geometry. Here I am 13 years later, having to teach my fourth grade students with the same limited technology. It is my belief that all students deserve the opportunity to attain an excellent education while reaching their full potential as individuals. Students should be provided with equal opportunities for an equitable education.
