My students are some of the most enthusiastic and wonderful kids you could ever hope to teach, but live in a region of the state, the Arkansas Delta, where the mechanization of agriculture has led to fewer and fewer jobs. As employment and population declines, so do resources available to students. I can't ask my students to purchase their own books; many come from homes where buying basic school supplies is a struggle. But our district struggles just as much to provide for its students, and unfortunately this year there is no room in our budget to add a new set of books to the Literacy program.
