My student-athletes attend an urban public high school in Austin with aging facilities, crowded classrooms, and limited funding. Our students are mostly Latino and 85% come from low socioeconomic status families. The school has been slapped with negative labels in the past, but in recent years, graduation rates and test scores have risen to record highs. There is also a renewed emphasis on athletic performance. Our community is absolutely crazy about soccer and our sport is by far the most played at the high school. The players are held to very high academic and behavioral standards. They understand the responsibility that comes with representing their school as soccer players. Last Spring all seven of our senior players graduated with plans to attend college, and one of them earned a scholarship to play soccer and at a local University.
