There are many benefits to having a wide range of books for students to read. We can help end "readicide" when we provide materials for our students that are comprehensible, compelling, and contextualized. We CAN help students become lifelong *bilingual* readers. "Picking up word meanings by reading is 10 times faster than intensive vocabulary instruction" -Stephen Krashen. Dr. Krashen along with many other researchers have studied the effects of incidental vocabulary learning through reading, their studies also show high levels of retention of vocabulary learned from reading. The books that I have chosen come from a list of books that have been ranked in order of ease by esteemed language teachers. These books will be comprehensible to my Spanish 1 and 2 students, and there is a wide variety of books that will allow students to find something that is interesting to them. When students find reading materials that are level appropriate and interesting they will continue reading, and continue picking up new vocabulary!
