Teaching in a community where the demographic breakdown has nearly 50% of the students identified as economically disadvantaged creates a unique challenge that I hope to see my kids overcome. Our school is a Title 1 school which means that we have been identified as a population with educationally at-risk children due to poverty. There are stark differences in the experiences my students have encountered and the backgrounds they come from. Despite the difficulties that they face on a daily basis, my kids are resilient and come in with beautiful smiles every day. Occasionally there are tears in those early morning hours, but these children thrive in the structure provided at school. Even on my worst days, I can't help but smile watching their light bulbs go off when they make discoveries and connections.
