As a hospital schools teacher the population of students I work with are middle school and high school students, who have been diagnosed with various forms of cancer, from the most common to the most rare. Currently, they are receiving treatment in a pediatric cancer center. Many students are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or a bone marrow transplant and, as a result, are in isolation due to their compromised immune systems. Therefore, I work bedside with them, providing one-on-one instruction so that they need not worry how time spent at the hospital might affect their educational development. For these children and teens, school signifies a continuation of normal life, and allows them to keep up with their peers. With that retrospect, schooling is considered both necessary and therapeutic. They are eager to learn and explore a world outside the walls of their hospital room.
