The 24 students in the Low Incidence Intellectual Disability Strand enter Brighton High School at age 14 and age out at 22. We work on functional academics, which is applying academic skills to a real life situations at home, on the job, or in the community. This includes skills such as handling money, seeking help, and accessing information. We work on daily living skills that are necessary to participate in home life and in the community. We learn skills needed for food preparation, shopping, cleaning, and laundry; and skills necessary to care for oneself, skill areas associated with food preparation, shopping, cleaning, laundry, and personal safety. Skills that are used to engage in free time activities for pleasure. We learn at varied rates due to diagnosed intellectual disabilities. We want the skills that are taught to be generalized across all content areas.
