An unprecedented 105 students have signed up for AP Physics 1 next year! Unfortunately, we only have about 60 copies of the textbook previously used to prepare students for the discontinued AP Physics B test, and this out-of-date textbook does not adequately cover the more rigorous conceptual demands of the newer AP Physics 1 test. There are no funds in the budget to buy more textbooks or anything else. Enter up-to-date free online textbooks -- and each Chromebook actually costs less than buying another copy of the no-longer-suitable traditional textbook! Using Chromebooks provides the further advantage of allowing students to delve deeper into the text. With services such as Perusall, classes will annotate their textbooks and have an asynchronous online discussion about the material therein. In addition to using the Chromebooks for textbooks, students will also use them to access a rich variety of online resources, such as videos, interactive simulations including ones from PhET, and problem-solving practice that gives immediate feedback such as Khan Academy. We will also use Chromebooks to collect, display, and analyze data from labs using digital sensors. My school does not have enough computers. 68 teachers share 7 computer carts/labs. Many of the carts/labs do not have enough computers for every student in a class and most carts/labs are unavailable for weeks on end during standardized testing. I want to assemble a class set of 35 Chromebooks to be shared among the three AP Physics 1 classes, and during periods where the AP Physics classes are not using them, the 315 students enrolled in 9th grade physics will be able to use them as well. This campaign is the first step in building that class set! Please help me and my students conquer AP Physics 1!
