I am working on building a more inclusive classroom library for my students. In order to do this I need two very specific things - bookshelves to store the books, and books to put on them. I have selected titles that reflect the diversity of my students - Black, POC, Latinx, LGBTQ+. My students have spent most of their education reading books by white male authors about white male people. They deserve to have a chance to see themselves in the books that they read. Some of these titles will be used as book club books, others will simply be used to for independent reading. In each circumstance students will be engaging with the texts in ways that they may never have before. Representation matters. My students should have the opportunity to be represented in the media they consume. The best way for me to make that happen is to provide them with books that they may not otherwise have access to.
