The living organisms and supplies I have requested already have a place in my science classroom. We have appropriate places for the animals according to their need for sunlight. They will be in the center of the classroom in an area that is accessible to all students. The students will learn the appropriate ways to handle and care for the animals. After students have shown that they can be responsible for the animals care, they will alternate jobs. This will help them learn how much care goes into having a pet and the importance of living things. Throughout the year, the students will observe the animals behavior, growth, and habit. They will also learn about the basic needs of animals. They will do research on the animals and record data. They will also compare and contrast the different living organisms. Students will also research the benefits that these animals contribute to our ecosystem. Students will also use charts to collect data on the animals. They will learn to track the temperature of the animals habitats using thermometers. They will use tools to measure the amount of food and water the animals require. Students will use both math and science interactive science journals to record data. I have seen the benefits of having pets in the classroom, especially for those who come from a difficult home life. I want this to be an experience for my students. They will feel that they are important members of our classroom community by taking ownership of their class pets. They will also have opportunities for writing reflections on their pets. The demographic of my students puts them at high risk for dropping out of school. I want to make science and math memorable and something that motivates them for years to come.
