Connecting with characters in stories is a powerful feeling. Learning from characters and their experiences is also just as important. Students need to feel represented. If you do not know about something, it's hard to be aware of your actions and the impact that it makes. Stories with characters of diversity help to teach empathy, inclusion, and acceptance of things and especially people who are different from yourself. The books that I have chosen represent: people of color, Muslim, Indigenous, and Asian cultures, as well as those who have autism and are apart of the LGBTQ community. Through this project, my classroom library will help to open a dialogue about all of my students experiences. Most importantly though, it will help to teach them to love themselves and those around them.
