Every quarter my students and I read a novel or a verse narrative (what my students call a chapter book). After we read the book together (they read, I read) we write an essay on a topic of my choosing. Then, we invite other teachers, principals, the nurse, and anyone else who can come to listen to us discuss our literature. I provide snacks and drinks. The students and the adults discuss literature just like in a "real" book club. This is a time to let my students shine. Sometimes it is easier to shine when there are fewer people in the room. This book club time allows their core content teachers to see my exceptional students in a whole new light. This quarter I would like to be able to do the same thing, but I would like to be able to send a copy of the book home with my students. Having a print-rich environment in your home makes you more likely to pick up a book and read. I want to add to my students' home libraries with the books we read in class. If the students are familiar with the text and they see those texts on their shelves at home; then maybe they will see themselves as readers. Also, having snacks and talking about books is super fun!
