Interactive literacy journals are an integral part of our daily instruction. Each student has an individual anchor chart to reference when we practice new skills and concepts. The primary journals are extremely beneficial because younger learners have space to write and draw that matches their developmental abilities. The composition notebooks will be used with older students. The Astrobrights paper makes graphic organizers stand out and seems to help improve retention of learning. Students also use the journals to record their thinking about reading and personal responses to stories and books. By creating these journals, students practice their English skills in all four areas of language development: reading, speaking, writing, and listening.
