These are tough kids to connect with. They have shields thicker than walls when they enter my room. With a lot of hard work, I can usually get them to give me a chance. One chance to get them hooked. If I fail, I've lost them, but if I succeed.....magic happens. Every year, through my reading groups, I see these students transform into curious, open-minded explorers of their own imagination. For one hour, they can escape the realities of their situations and be normal high school kids. But alas, I don't have the funding for new books. I have literally been making copies of the books I personally own. This is tough on the school printer and tough on my lesson planning time. If I could just get a few sets of books that I know for a fact they will love, I could streamline the whole process and focus on digging into these great books with these amazing kids.
