Students in our tutoring program are ninth graders who, despite their honest efforts, struggle to succeed and excel in their courses. Though they are present and willing learners, due to circumstances often outside of their control - both at school and at home - they have failed to earn grades that reflect their native intelligence. As they attend a high-achieving school where many upperclassmen possess resumes bursting at the seams with accolades, the danger for these students is not that they will not graduate, though that is true for some. More threatening is the prospect that they will be overlooked: passed along because they do not disrupt others' learning, but forgotten because they have not the resources to shine, either. With the right support, our program hopes to give these students the skills and confidence they need to overcome all that weighs them down, turn their academic careers around, and become productive contributors to and leaders of their high school community.
