I have the privilege of teaching a beautifully diverse class from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. However, my classroom library does not reflect this diversity as well as it should. These books will enhance my classroom library with literature that is culturally relevant and reflective of my students, empowering them to identify with and learn from characters from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Representation matters. Students need to see books that showcase characters that look like them, explain and represent their beliefs, show their cultural practices, and honor their diversity. Sharing these books will allow students to see the value we place on diversity and inclusion, and will provide windows and mirrors for them to see themselves and others.
