My scholars attend an inner city, high performing, creative arts, public elementary school where 97% of the student population receive free lunch. They live in the state of Louisiana which has been devastated by two natural and unnatural disasters directly related to science and inquiry, including the oil spill that is devastating the Gulf Coast. The state itself has a rich foundation in environmental science from its delicate wetlands, to waterways that impact not only our state but the national economy. Many of the scholars take a keen interest in science and careers related to science. Many scholars also claim science as their favorite subject. In order to hold their interest in the subject and field, it is necessary to incorporate these books into our curriculum in addition to experiments and hands-on learning.
