My students live in Appalachia and attend a school in the outskirts of a small city. The school is mostly middle class families, however, more and more of our families are struggling to meet the needs of their children because of a changing economy. My students are in the AIG (gifted) program which means they see me once a week for an hour for enrichment work. This work is designed to challenge them and make them think deeply. I also work with classroom teachers to meet the needs of these very bright students. Our district has faced far reaching budget cuts (along with the rest of the country's schools) that mean we do not have extra funds for things that will engage students beyond the mandated curriculum. My students need different materials to be successful and meet their full and true potential. They work hard and are our future leaders and problem solvers.
