I recently completed a professional development class on computer science (introducing coding to students). What an eye opener! We explored the science behind computers and the programs that run them. As a result, I am committed to introducing my new found knowledge to as many students as possible, and my plan includes an early morning or after school coding club to reach students who are not in my classroom but who are interested in learning to code. My goal is to motivate and prepare students to be 21st-century learners and, ultimately, 21st-century professionals and leaders within their own community. Unfortunately, I share a computer cart with three other classrooms. We average 1.5 hours of computer time per day per class, and use that time working on computer-based language arts and math programs while also practicing for upcoming online state assessments. Consequently, there is not enough time remaining for focused computer science lessons. Also, an afterschool tutoring program uses our computer lab three days per week. Obviously, students who are interested in computer science (as well as students in general) do not have access to needed technology. We literally have a world-class technology park and super computer directly across the street from our school, yet our public school system isn't allocating appropriate resources and time to effectively prepare students with the knowledge and skills to pursue related careers. I am requesting 7 Lenovo Flex 3 2-in-1 11.6 inch HD Touch-Screen Convertible Laptop computers for my classroom so my students can have more computer time to work on coding lessons. This benefits my students, and it increases the computer lab time for the students of three other teachers. Additionally, it will allow me to pioneer a Coding Club for the many students who are genuinely interested and, in fact, excited!
