My students are a diverse group of California inner-city high school juniors who are part of an program integrating American Literature, US History, and Environmental Science classes with regular camping and hiking trips. My students attend a school that has made significant progress, but is still working to ensure that all students receive a quality education and graduate ready for college and the world beyond high school. Many of my students are from families struggling socioeconomically, and they represent at least five of our city's various ethnic groups. A number of them have struggled to connect with and find relevant the literature of high school. Nonetheless, they are strong analytical thinkers and flourish when engaged effectively.
