Bibliotherapy can assist students in overcoming problems by reading about characters who have faced similar situations, hardships, and dilemmas. As students read or listen to books about emotions they increase their emotional literacy (the ability to identify emotions in self and others). The stories also validate feelings as students realize that they are not alone in how they feel. Students will realize that other children have similar problems and have been successful in solving them. Stories can serve to facilitate open discussion and self-understanding and lead to the discovery of new coping skills.
