After working with my 6th grade students on reading the play, The Diary of Anne Frank, I wanted them to be able to experience the sights, smells and sounds of what Anne went through, and I stumbled upon a Virtual Reality experience offered through Oculus. The experience itself takes you through Anne Frank's house which most of my students will never be fortunate enough to see. I couldn't afford to bring it to them, so with the VR capability, I know my students will appreciate seeing so much more of the world in a way that transcends static photos or videos that don't feel immersive. I am still learning about this new world of VR myself. So, living out in a suburban area where most of my students don't even travel to the nearest metropolitan city, doesn't provide my school with many opportunities to expose them to the world at large! My special needs students are already working hard to catch up to those for whom things come easily. I hope to open their eyes to so much more that our world has to offer!
