Many of my students are struggling readers. They have gaps in their learning due to various reasons. I hope to provide my students with a variety of decodable readers. Each set of readers reinforces a certain phonics skill. I plan to target the skills students are lacking, and use the decodable readers to fill those gaps. Decodable books support a phonics or code-based approach to reading, where letter sound correspondences are taught in isolation. Studies have shown that when children read decodable books they are more likely to read unknown and familiar words more accurately and with less support.
