I teach 3rd grade at one of the oldest and neediest schools in Las Vegas. Nearly 100% of our students receive free/reduced lunch and breakfast, and nearly 90% of the students are English Language Learners. They come from a background where many of their parents did not graduate from high school and lack the skills to help their students. They lack the language and vocabulary skills to read on grade level and come to school reading 2-3 years behind where they should be. Our population is highly transient and so the students do not receive consistent curriculum and interventions and yet still they are eager to learn. Their families want them to be successful and to achieve more. They don't have the technology resources at home to prepare them for the world they live in. They come to school looking for that engaging, creative teaching that will prepare them for a new world.
