Our knowledge of how children learn has grown substantially over the last few decades. We now understand that success in learning requires the student to be at the center of the experience, making connections across disciplines and also across contextual settings. The best way to open my students’ eyes to the world of engineering is through early exploration. Using the requested engineering tubs first thing in the morning, my kindergartners will be able to interact with their peers and make exploration a part of their daily routine. Working in pairs, students will be given few directions about their specific supplies. Instead, I will ask my students to reference the photo cards in their tub showing actual bridges, vehicles and buildings to manipulate their elements. Over and over again, students will investigate their ideas in a play-based inquiry activity. Students will be able to build bridges, vehicles, and houses. As I rotate the engineering tubs each day, my students will have new chances to build and explore. In addition to the hands-on exploration, I will integrate engineering concepts across disciplines using the literature. Students will be asked to make connections to main characters in books like Rosie Revere, Engineer and use their problem solving skills throughout the stories. This integrated approach encourages each child to think in a more comprehensive manner and increases their confidence in their problem-solving abilities.
