My students need a class set of 26 of the book Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate to complete a novel study and develop strong comprehension skills. Research shows that 75% of students who still struggle with reading by 3rd grade will never catch up. It is critical that my students have strong reading skills by the end of their 3rd grade year. I truly believe sparking a love for reading in my students will greatly improve their reading skills. This project will fund a class set of the novel Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate. This novel's themes of homelessness, family relationships, and social issues will have a meaningful connection for my students. I plan to use this novel to deepen my students comprehension skills, while providing them with a story that has personal meaning for them.
