I teach sixth grade math and math intervention to 120 students in a low-income urban area of Rhode Island. Most of these students are several years below grade level in mathematics and do not have access to basic school supplies like paper and pencils. This year, we are working to become confident problem solvers. In order to inspire my students to take on challenging problems, I want to give them the opportunity to engage with mathematics in interesting and exciting ways. By using individual whiteboards, students will not have to worry about paper and pencils. They will also be engaged in the work. I will simultaneously be able to quickly and effectively check for understanding.
