Our school is located in a low income area in a small school district. The needs of our students are great, however, our students understand what it means to work hard to achieve success. The students that I work with, as a Speech and Language Pathologist, often have multiple academic areas that are difficult for them. The Learning Specialist and I have specifically noticed a pattern with my students that have speech sound disorders, it is often very difficult for them to learn how to read. They sound out words differently and a traditional reading program is not sufficient to meet their needs. We have witnessed students move on to middle school that still don't have the fundamental phonics and phonemic awareness skills needed to read, simply because the materials and resources we have available are not designed for them. To witness these students work so hard, yet make little growth is heartbreaking. They deserve to have a reading program designed to meet their needs.
