My students are inner-city middle school students from Chicago who receive special education services in my classroom. They vary wildly in their backgrounds, interests, strengths and functional levels, but one thing they have in common is that they all LOVE to read when they have the just-right book. Studies show that time spent reading books at one's independent reading level is more influential in developing a reading ability than any other instructional approach. What's more, having high-interest, varied texts readily available in the learning environment is an essential way to make reading for different purposes accessible and habitual. My students beg me for new books every few months, and have been able to tell me explicitly what they want. They're never happier than when I bring a new load. Thank you in advance for any support that you are able to offer and I promise you, it is most beneficial!
