My students need engaging, hands-on materials, including Wooden Pattern Blocks, Geostix and four Hands-On Sorting Trays, that support preschool math concepts. During our afternoon small group centers, we focus on preschool math concepts, such as shapes, numbers, sorting, and patterns. In preschool special education, along with teaching the actual math skills themselves (i.e. number recognition), many of my students are working on "learn to learn" skills. These "learn to learn" skills include maintaining attention to an activity, sitting in their chairs, taking turns, following directions, etc. The use of engaging materials, such as the math materials included in this project, result in an increased motivation to participate in the activity, maintain attention, and increase their knowledge of the academic concepts we are teaching using the materials, such as sorting items based on color, or using shape blocks to build a robot. Behavior goes hand in hand with a student's ability to learn; engaging materials help not only support academic concepts, but also help in developing "learn to learn" skills for preschoolers. My goal is to provide my students with a strong foundation of math skills and to do this, we need hands on and engaging math materials.
