The Covid-19 pandemic has affected my classroom in many ways. One specific way is that it has limited the opportunities and experiences that help to foster the love of reading in my students. In previous years, many of my students would have attended a preschool type program, but due to the pandemic, that is not true for this school year. My 19 kindergarteners have been working hard to learn the fundamentals of reading. Despite most of their lives being lived through a pandemic and not getting the normalcy that previous classes have had, they have continued to grow and learn and are excited about learning. They have made me extremely proud of what all they have already accomplished this school year. That being said, I have noticed the drop in assessment scores when compared to pre-pandemic scores. This grant would provide me with needed materials that would help lessen this gap. It would give my students fun activities that are also hands-on. These materials would meet my students right where they are now academically. When children have the opportunity to have the needed materials that are also fun and engaging, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and ownership over what they are learning, which in return helps them become lifelong learners. My students are excited about coming to school and learning to read and I want to continue to encourage and foster this love of learning.
