In first grade, our learning begins with a whole group teach and then I send them off for the application. Having an easel would allow my students an opportunity to interact with me during the lessons in all academic areas. These charts that are created during a classroom lesson are what really turns a child's thinking into something that is visible and concrete, something that they can refer back to when they need help or better yet, when they have made a new discovery in their learning and they can “add to” . The use of big books is yet another resource in my first grade classroom. Not only does the size of the book give my class an opportunity to experience a text together but the quality of texts allows readers of all levels an opportunity to read and experience the text together. Having this big book stand set the stage for shared reading, build vocabulary, work on fluency and strengthen comprehension.
