My students have called me out. They were looking at books from my classroom library and asked why I only had English and Spanish books. "Miss, we are from all over. Why do you not have my language?" They are not wrong. I regularly use my bi-lingual books to make my new comer students feel comfortable with reading. We do research projects in all our native languages and we practice translating our thoughts into English. I encourage and teach my students how to use bi-lingual dictionaries in order to expand their world. It is about time I had a classroom library that reflects the languages spoken in my classroom. The skills gained in reading comprehension is transferable in all languages. It connects students to their roots and helps broaden their world perspective to read books from authors around the world. My students need to see faces and languages that look and sound like them to validate their humanity. We all belong here.
