In this project, students will be challenged to read two award-winning coming-of-age texts that highlight realistic issues that students their age face in modern society. Students will familiarize themselves with the coming-of-age genre as well as poetry, before completing their own poetry anthology at the end of the unit. "The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle" and "The Poet X" were selected as the pillar texts for this project because of their critically-acclaimed writing and their cultural-relevancy for teenagers growing up in 2019. Since our class size is small, I believe it is realistic for students to have a copy of the two texts, especially since they will be annotating them and analyzing the readings for text evidence. By having a copy to read and annotate, I believe my students will take more pride in their work and learn to appreciate the authors' styles, voice, and themes.
