I teach sixth grade at an elementary school in California. My students are primarily Hispanic English learners and come from low socioeconomic households. Many of them struggle to relate what they are learning in school to the practical applications of "the real world". To many of them, the knowledge that they are gaining doesn't extend beyond the classroom. It is my job, as their teacher, to show them that learning doesn't stop when they leave the classroom and head for home, and that there is an incredibly bright future ahead of them; one where they can choose what they want to do and who they want to be. I believe it is my job to open as many doors possible for them, so they can see the wide variety of choices that are out there and find the best path to walk on.
