My students are a great group of kids who love to read! They come to school and want to learn something new and challenge their little minds each day. It is amazing and powerful to watch a first grader read their first sentence, first small book, or even their first chapter book. Our classroom environment is like home. It is safe, calm and we are a family. However, I often ask myself, "am I meeting the needs of all 20 kids?" I tell my class that choosing a book is like wearing shoes. We all wear different sizes and we all choose different styles. Now, I simply need to have a variety of different levels and topics available in our classroom library to foster this analogy. When you walk in during guided reading time you will see a small group with me working together on a leveled reader, a group reading out of their private leveled book boxes on big comfy pillows in the room, a group at listening stations and a small group collaborating over reading or writing.
