The students in my class are 10th graders and 100% African American. They are placed into my class because they scored far below grade-level on standardized Reading tests for multiple years in a row. I was their 9th grade Reading/English teacher and I will teach them again as 10th graders, so I know this group of students very well. They are very sociable and interested in discussing what they read when they can relate the content to their own experiences. Many of them experience difficulty reading for sustained periods of time, so I am hoping that by purchasing several graphic novels as well as other books about sports, urban life, and relationships that they will want to keep reading throughout the class period and throughout the school year.
