My students attend an urban school in California, where 93% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and 100% of students are of color. My Precalculus and AP Calculus students are some of the smartest, most capable students in our school. They've reached a level in their mathematics education that few students from their kind of background can claim. They are taking some of the most rigorous courses that high school mathematics has to offer. They have strong study habits and excellent grades. But right now they generally do not have the ability to do well on standardized tests, because they lack the resources that are readily available to more privileged students. Simply put, no one has taught them how to succeed on the SAT, SAT II, and AP exams.
