I teach Latin to 7th and 8th grade students at a chartered public school where students enroll via the lottery from diverse parts of the city, and from surrounding areas too. 49% of students are now eligible for free or reduced lunch. Latin is taught here as a language and culture that is foundational in its own right and particularly for the acquisition and understanding of other world languages and cultures, including our own. We at the school hope to instill in our students such an understanding of this ancient language and culture that will encourage critical thinking in all areas of life and that will enrich their reading, writing, and speaking. Like the founding fathers of our country, who weighed in particular the models of Greece and Rome when considering how to establish this nation, we hope that a similar grounding will affect students' decisions throughout their lives.
