I love to start my day with a morning meeting on the rug in the morning. It is essential to me that in my classroom we are family, and I want to make sure that just like families eat and talk about the day at the dinner table, that my students have a place to come together and share their thoughts and ideas on our rug to start each day off. I also love doing whole-group mini-lessons on the carpet and then sending students into stations or back to their desks to apply what we just learned about in the mini-lesson. I need a rug that comfortably seats all students in order to provide this to my students! What I love about this rug is that each student can have their own individual square so that there are no issues. As a first-year teacher, I know I will not have the most flexible-seating oriented classroom ever, but the items that I chose will at least give my class a start. This will be an option that I can use for students that may need to get a little bit of energy out while working or a resource that I can have at different stations so I can decrease the likelihood of becoming restless. I am looking forward to also seeing how students perform when flexible seating is integrated into my classroom. I will present the challenge to students to try their very best not to have the seating options be a distraction, but a great addition to their learning. It is one thing to read about flexible seating, but I am interested to see the effects of flexible seating in action.
