  • NAS-D Nights News

    Funded Feb 19, 2013

I want to thank you again for your generous donations. The ability to record their newscasts on digital media allowed our students to review, delete, and re-do their newscasts until they met their standards. Without the digital camcorder, they wouldn't have been able to see and hear themselves speak.

The impact of having modern technology to use on their project was felt across the classroom. My students are at-risk, and learning English as a second language. They have been under served in many of their previous schools. So knowing that someone cared enough to buy them something nice really meant a lot to them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Robertson

  • Let's Make Soap!

    Funded Jun 2, 2012

I would like to express my sincerest appreciation for your generous gift. I work in an alternative school that services at-risk teens, and we as teachers are always hearing from the students that they want to learn things that will help them in the real world. Students also say they want hands-on activities.

Teaching them how to make soap allowed me to teach them a bit of chemistry and gave them the opportunity to do hands-on work. Before starting our project, I went out and took pictures of handmade soaps for sale in boutiques, and showed them how much they could sell them for if they got some practice at making them pretty. Several students perked their ears when they saw the $8 price tags on a little bar of soap!

For some of my students the idea that they could sell something that they could make at home legitimately with a high profit margin was something they had never considered. In addition, several came back after the soap making and told me how much better it made their skin feel, and that when they use their homemade soap, they don't need to use lotion. This again opened their minds to an idea that a different world is out there that is accessible to them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Robertson

My students are categorized as multiple at-risk. They fit into more than one of the traditional at-risk categories (for example, poverty, pregnancy, gang affiliation, involvement in the justice system, undocumented, etc.) Most have had an interrupted education, taking months or years off before deciding to return to high school. Many of my students are teenage moms and dads who are struggling to get their high school diploma while raising their children and work. They need as much support as they can.
