My students are 98.6% African American, 93.4% low income and 17.2% special education. My school is Title 1 eligible and in the heart of one of the highest crime neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago. Despite these challenges, our students score significant higher than the CPS average on both the PSAE and ACT. However, these statistics do not truly describe who my students are. My students are dedicated, hardworking, and fun loving. The 14 year old who asks before class to stand in the back because she was up all night taking care of her baby sister and didn’t want to miss anything, showed more maturity than many adults could muster. When the quiet kid hobbles into the classroom after recovering from a stray bullet wound and three groups immediately offer to bring him up to speed on our project I am reminded of the resilience and selflessness of my students.
