I am just stepping into a new classroom and we are missing some key components to a successful early childhood special education classroom. Using sensory materials and manipulatives to keep students engaged on a level that is appropriate for where they are in their abilities is one of the best ways to promote life long learning. Products that I selected focus mainly math/literacy items because these are the building blocks many other concepts in an early childhood classroom. The literacy and math activities that I selected employee motor skills and are tailored to be more sensory driven. These items will be helpful for my students with both communication and motor delays. I chose many manipulatives and sensory materials within this project because I feel like these are the best way to help students stay focused and engaged. Specifically, I selected small counting and sorting animals so that the students can practice counting, sorting and communicating about them. I chose the farmers market fruit and vegetable sorting set so students can practice sorting by color and type in the house area. I have added a library shelf to hold books in our library as well as provide cozy seating, so students will feel more invited to come and enjoy a book. I also selected a variety of literacy toys such as magnetic alphabet letters, which the students can use on our white boards, BOHS literacy wiz for children to practice matching letters and letter sounds and the alphapops so students can experience more letters in the house area as they eat their "popsicles!" Overall, I selected a variety of toys and seating that will lend to a successful, engaging classroom all year long.
