My school is large - over 1,000 students. We are almost 90% minority and 70% of our students are considered English language learners. In addition, 70% qualify for free or reduced price lunch. I am a Speech Language Pathologist that serves 65+ students. My students (K-5) have speech and language impairments, and in addition, some of them have learning disabilities or intellectual disabilities. Examples of their learning goals include increasing sentence length, using correct verb tense, correctly producing sounds to improve speech intelligibility, and making needs known through sign language or pictures. Examples of goals directly supporting reading comprehension include increasing vocabulary, comparing and contrasting concepts, retelling with details, and predicting outcomes. My students love coming to "speech" because we always find a way to be successful.
