My students come from a varied of sociol-economic backgrounds. Many go to public daycare because both parents are working to make ends meet. It seems that the children are not receiving help at home because of working parents. They are coming to our school on lower levels than in past years. We are a year round school which helps the children retain subject matter without long breaks. The children love to play and work with manipulative's that are not as common in most households. I provide as many opportunities for them to develop fine motors skills using playdough, foam, tool working centers, painting, cutting, building and constructing projects. They love it. I find that the better developed their fine motor skills are, the better writers and readers they become.
