At our school, we believe all students, families, and staff deserve to feel a sense of belonging. For our school to truly be a welcoming place, all students must have the opportunities to both see themselves and see others in the characters they read in classroom books. When students read about characters like them, it validates their own experiences and stories. When students read about characters who are not like themselves, they develop deeper understanding, empathy, and respect for others. It is critical that all students read and have easy access to books with Black and Brown protagonists and storylines that will help them develop into anti-racists. These books will enable my students to read about Black and Brown protagonists and engage in conversations about how to be anti-racist. They will not only be available for students to read independently, but we will also have opportunities to read select books together as a class during lessons, enriching lunch bunch book clubs, and reading challenges. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect and write about their reading on a class book blog. In order to use these books for years to come, I have also included contact paper and cutting mat to reinforce these paperback books.
